Inquiry & Analysis Post 1

Can you give an example of a time when you had to make inferences and judgments based on quantitative data? What assumptions did you make? How confident were you in your analyses?

This quantitative analysis mindset was activated during my search for colleges to apply to during high school. I had two options: attend a state school close to my home and very diverse or attend a predominantly white institution with high education quality. I started to look at diversity rates but also the education opportunities in both categories of the schools. I weighed the data against one another to determine at which school I would feel most comfortable. This included data such as the number of color students and also data on educational opportunities at the school such as research opportunities and the number of students that went to medical school. As the college process came to an end, I had to make a decision. I thus weighed diversity with the quality of education and this was not easy. In the end, I chose quality education. I wanted to go to a college that was small, had countless research opportunities, good financial aid, and had a more individualistic environment. Unfortunately, this sacrificed a high rate of diversity but I regard education as my primary objective. State schools are amazing universities with high educational quality but the ones near my home were large schools where I would be just one more student. And to be honest, I wasn’t that confident in my choice. I didn’t know if I made the right decision but my parents helped me with the choice and I definitely do not regret choosing Wesleyan. I love this school and love the science opportunities here. I wouldn’t change my choice.
